Automated Cell Awarded Patent for Functional Biology Platform

Pittsburgh, PA - February 7, 2005 - The U.S. Patent and Trade Office has awarded Automated Cell patent #6,830,931 for an apparatus and method for analyzing the effect of proteins and other biological and chemical moieties on living cells. Claims include: the measurement of the 3D motion of cells; capturing successive fluorescent and visible images over time and analyzing the successive images to produce time related kinetic information; and the statistical analysis of that information to measure cellular performance. The patent refers to Automated Cell’s functional biology imaging platform, CytoWorks™, which it employs to screen its human antibody libraries for therapeutic drug leads in the field of cancer. Raymond K. Houck, Automated Cell’s CEO, stated “This patent provides us with further intellectual property that applies to our functional biology approach to the identification of antibody therapeutics. The US Patent office has issued one set of claims and we are proceeding with the prosecution of the many additional claims of the original application”.

About Automated Cell

Automated Cell Inc, (ACI) is focused on the discovery and development of monoclonal antibody therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Our unique and proprietary technology allows us to rapidly identify fully human antibodies that have relevant biological function in a specific disease. Our starting point for drug discovery is the identification of these functional antibodies. We then use the antibodies to identify and validate their targets, shortening the path to the clinic. We are creating a pipeline of antibody therapeutic candidates that we shall either out-license to pharmaceutical partners or put into clinical trials ourselves.
